Antwerp Central station has acquired several names in local dialect, one of which is the Railway Cathedral. The station is famous all over the world for its impressive architecture. The current station building, whose red steel roof construction can be seen from a considerable distance, was designed by Clément Van Bogaert and built between 1899 and 1905. When you enter the station through the main entrance you find yourself in the impressive central hall with mosaic floors, stately staircases, gleaming tiled walls, high vaulted ceilings, and a huge dome. As you walk on through the arches to the platforms, you will be treated to an impressive sight reminiscent of the early days of steam trains. Don’t forget to pause and enjoy this magnificent space and the modern trains.
