The diamond district in Antwerp, also known as the diamond square mile, is a true craftsman’s area where history merges with the here and now in an extraordinary way. Nowhere else in the world will you find so many diamond cutters, traders and jewellers within such a small area. On an average weekday you just have to look around and you will see them: the diamond cutters traditionally dressed in black, the showcases full of sparkling stones and the various diamond houses secured like Fort Knox. The diamond trade started to flourish in Antwerp about 500 years ago. There are several reasons why the diamond industry took off here: the large port with connections to all corners of the world, the large Orthodox Jewish community and the favourable trade tariffs. The original residents of this district were mainly Orthodox Jews, but these days the community consists of a colourful mix of nationalities and backgrounds.

No visit to the Diamond City would be complete without going inside Antwerp’s Diamond Museum DIVA. In 2018, the museum was fully renovated and moved to the other side of the city, away from the old diamond district.
