The Queen Elizabeth Hall has a rich history. In 1897 the Royal Society for Zoology Antwerp (KMDA) commissioned the hall as part of a festive complex, and where the Zoo’s own orchestra could also give concerts. After all, the building is in the middle of Antwerp Zoo! The hall served as a dance hall for the wealthy bourgeoisie and hosted various symphony orchestras. Unfortunately, the complex was badly damaged during the Second World War. In 1959, construction work commenced on a new modern concert hall which was opened the following year by Queen Elisabeth. In 2011 it was decided to completely rebuild the hall using modern techniques and in 2016 the new complex, which also includes a convention centre, was opened in the presence of Queen Mathilde.
